Two-person camera planning: framing, push-ins and crop checks
The frame has to serve two subjects at once. Start with their positions and a simple camera choice, then inspect the edges. A safe-looking diagram is not evidence that a future render will keep a face or a microphone in view.
Written and documentation checked
1. Choose the frame for the action
| Frame | Useful planning question | Original starting plan |
|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | Can both faces and gestures fit without crossing? | Call & response |
| 1:1 | How do different subject heights share the frame? | The quiet reaction |
| 16:9 | Does the extra width serve the exchange, or only add empty space? | Across the eyeline |
2. Change the camera or the acting first
A locked two-shot is a clear written baseline. A slow push-in changes the final crop, even when the performers stay still. In “A closer conversation”, the opening holds the frame and the next shot proposes a gentle approach; the acting remains small so the comparison has a specific focus.
Inspect the entire planned instruction for a contradiction such as a locked camera combined with an orbit in the notes. A model may still move the view despite your instruction; this guide describes intent, not a guarantee of camera behavior.
3. Understand the local crop diagram
The photo tool places two images in equal columns of a selected frame. “Contain” shows the whole image; “cover” fills each column with a centered crop. For an 800×600 image in one half of a square frame, cover retains 37.5% of its area. This is geometry, not a face or quality score.
The dashed 5%, 10% or 15% margin is chosen by you for planning. It is not TikTok, Reels or a model provider’s official safety area. Inspect both faces, hands, subject separation and microphone placement manually, then check the actual delivery platform separately.
4. Save the reason for a framing revision
Instead of “make it better”, record a visible problem: “B’s hand meets the right edge at the planned ending.” Save a version, change only the crop or camera approach, and compare the written settings. A measured improvement still needs an authorized actual output to inspect.
Keep the original reference files outside the project backup. The local library stores your written notes and settings, not images. This keeps the export portable and makes its contents easy to review before sharing.
